Kolowich on Rethinking the "Ideal Page Width" for Web Design

Over on the Web Video Expert blog, ChannelOne partner Michael Kolowich shares some interesting data that contradicts the conventional wisdom that web pages should be designed for a 800-pixel-wide screen.

In fact, he found that fewer than 1.5% of visitors to the diginovations.com website had screens of 800 pixels or less, and he argues for a new "least common denominator" page width of 920 pixels, to accommodate a 1024-wide screen.

Check out the detailed data on his post, "It's Time to Re-Think the 'Ideal Page Width' for Web Design."

Hmmm...maybe we should do the same here at www.channelonemarketing.com.  A look at a similar analysis in Google Analytics applied to our site shows that less than 3% of our visitors have screens with fewer than 1024 pixels width.  Don't be surprised to see us widen this site to 920 pixels before too long.
